Sherling Steel - History

Sherling & Sons Ltd. was registered as a limited company on 10th October, 1936 incorporating a long and established family business based in Cork city on the south coast of Ireland.

During the thirties and forties, Sherlings continued to expand and in1948 set up premises at Griffin Bridge, Rialto, Dublin on the old Rialto Lime Company site. It was from here that Sherlings began to service the whole of Ireland and in 1984 strengthened its position in Northern Ireland with the establishment of Steel Sales (Belfast) Ltd.

With increasing demand for better services throughout the eighties, the company moved premises to a much larger site in Jamestown Road, Inchicore in Dublin which enabled it to increase both the range and volume of stocked items. Through the late eighties and early nineties cutting, profiling, shotblasting and coating services were also introduced into this facility.

In 1995 Jameston Cladding and Profiling Ltd. was established to focus on profiling and shear/punch services. Initially based on the Jamestown Road site, this business grew rapidly and relocated to Newbridge, Co. Kildare in 2003 from where it has continued to expand including the addition of automated beam welding in 2007.

In parallel with developing its processing services the Sherling Steel Group has continued to expand its presence in Ireland and the UK through expansion and acquisition. The major milestones have been:

  • 1994 : Acquisition of Currie Steels in Lisburn, Northern Ireland
  • 1997 : Acquisition of Swift Steel in Newport, Gwent
  • 1999 : Acquisition of SB Steel in Carlow
  • 2000 : Acquisition of NBT Fixings in Dublin
  • 2003 : Opening of Sherling Steel West in Limerick
  • 2005/6 : Major Expansion in Northern Ireland
  • 2007 : Opening of Sherling Steel UK in Shafton, Yorkshire
  • 2008 : Opening of Sherling Steel South in Cork
  • 2008 : Launch of Sherling Pipeline

With eight business units spread across the island, we are by far the largest privately owned steel stockholding and services company in Ireland. The Sherling Steel UK facility in Shafton is the largest in the group and has already benefitted from a major capital investment program, establishing a strong base for future growth in the UK market.
